Community Housing Support for Caretaker Veteran and Mother
One of the most gratifying experiences of our work at Indy Warrior Partnership (IWP) is seeing veterans we have helped encourage others in their community to ask for help. This was a recent case when, in June, a veteran IWP supported referred a friend to us for housing support.
Murray Carter* is a post-9/11 Army vet (’02-’12) and caretaker for his mother. Recently Murray received the news that his home was being condemned, forcing him and his mother to vacate the premises immediately with the few things they could transport. Knowing his situation, a fellow-veteran friend of Murray’s recommended he contact IWP for assistance. Murray told IWP Case Coordinator Abby Pequignot about his situation and that he was currently staying at an extended stay paid for by his mentor for the week.
Abby searched for local resources and presented Murray’s case to a standing community meeting. She was fortunately met with an overwhelming response from those at the meeting who wanted to help. Over the course of 18 hours, all clothing and essential needs for Murray and his mother were met while Abby began enrolling Murray in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. Abby also secured an additional three days at the extended-stay hotel while they awaited the SSVF processing. IWP will continue to work with Murray and his mother to ensure their needs are met, and they have a safe place to call home in the future. We are always proud of our work to support veterans and provide them with the stability they deserve.
