Fostering Trust Through Proactive Outreach: Resources and Support Provided to Indy Veteran

For many veterans, asking for help can be daunting, even when the simple act of reaching out can provide them with essential resources. This was the case for Tammi Matthews, an Air Force veteran new to Indianapolis who found support in her community through Indy Warrior Partnership (IWP).

Tammi left the Air Force as a Master Sergeant in 2022 after 20 years of service. Following her service, she and her family decided to get a fresh start and move from Delaware to Indianapolis. Attending a community event is where she met IWP Community Coordinator Abby Pequignot. After some casual conversation, Tammi raised her concerns about her children's future. Abby asked Tammi if she knew about the state benefits available for the children of disabled veterans in Indiana, of which Tammi was unaware.

Further in the conversation, Tammi mentioned feeling like a balloon floating around by herself. She confessed she wanted to get more involved in her community but wasn't sure how. This prompted Abby to offer up information about the local women veterans' groups and the veteran suicide prevention coalition that takes place in her county. Tammi told Abby she would like more information on these groups and possibly attend meetings since it's a cause close to her heart. Tammi provided Abby with her contact information to send her the resources they discussed in their encounter. Abby will continue to keep a line of communication with Tammi to follow up and see that her needs are met.

IWP understands how crucial it is to venture into the community and engage with hard-to-reach veterans like Tammi, as proactive outreach fosters trust, breaks down barriers, and ensures that every deserving individual receives the support they require.
